Nicole McMullin struggled with loneliness and emotional disconnect from childhood, and longed for connectedness. Her music was where she found her emotional connection and, through music, found refuge and hope. She felt compelled to bring this same magic to others and became a mental health therapist. Learn more about how she connected her passion for music with mental health advocacy in today’s post.
Meet Matt Scott. A 23-year old advocate against sexual violence who utilizes his skills as a digital storyteller and his passion to make a difference to bring about increased awareness and education. While he has written for Superbands before, sharing his story on his stance on the power music has to heal, we wanted to get to know (and also wanted our readers to get to know) a little more about Matt, his background on the topic, and what exactly drives him to want to make a change. Our interview with him was not only insightful but inspirational, and we hope that this month— April, National Sexual Assault and Awareness Month—he inspires each of our readers to take a stand for what they believe in. Matt Scott isn't just raising his voice, he's raising the bar. Read more for our interview with this driven young man.
Sexual violence. Over the past half decade, it’s something I’ve encountered, namely through the stories of others who’ve entrusted their experiences with me— both survivors and secondhand survivors alike. As an advocate for healthy relationships, a peer educator and friend, to have someone disclose their assault has not been uncommon.
Guest blogger Matt Scott, and advocate against sexual violence (and long time supporter of Superbands), speaks out about how music helped a friend struggling through difficult times and his own interpretation of the meaning behind '(super) bands save fans'.
"I created Superbands as a means of creating the community that I once longed for as a teen, struggling to figure out who I was. Concerts were the only place where I truly felt happiness. Why did I feel so at home in these dark venues, surrounded by these complete strangers? It was because we were united, connected by the music."
Superbands Founder, Jessica Villa, shares her personal story and how her own experiences led her to creating this online community of music-lovers worldwide. Learn about what Superbands means to her, and why she believes in the importance of being connected.
