Does Apple Music Have More Paying Subscribers Than Spotify?
Apple’s chief financial officer, Luca Maestri, revealed the total number of subscribers – which indicates a quarterly increase of more than 40 million accounts – during an earnings call that followed the publication of the company’s first-quarter fiscal year 2021 financial report. The Cupertino-based company generated a whopping $89.58 billion in revenue during the first quarter of 2021, an increase of more than 50% over the $58.31 billion made during the same period in the previous year. In the first three months of 2021, goods sales accounted for $72.68 billion of the total (compared to $44.97 billion in the same period in 2020), with the remaining $16.90 billion or so coming from services (compared to $13.35 billion in the same period in 2020).
As a result, Europe accounted for $22.26 billion ($14.29 billion in the first quarter of 2020), Greater China accounted for $17.33 billion ($9.46 billion in the first quarter of 2020), Japan accounted for $7.74 billion ($5.21 billion), and the rest of Asia-Pacific accounted for $7.54 billion ($3.89 billion).
Regarding the aforementioned subscribership improvement, CFO Luca Maestri specified: “During the March quarter, we added more than 40 million paid subs sequentially, and we have now reached more than 660 million paid subscriptions across the services on our platform.”
However, the 57-year-old native of Rome, Italy, did not provide specifics on how many users each Apple service (including Apple Music, Apple Fitness+, Apple Arcade, and Apple TV+) had. However, considering the large number of users across all of these services, it’s plausible that Apple Music has eclipsed Spotify in terms of subscribership. Having said that, it’s worth noting that the most recent time Apple officially announced Apple Music membership numbers looked to be in June of this year, when SVP of internet software and services Eddy Cuin stated that the music-streaming platform had garnered 60 million subscribers worldwide.
The company estimates that it added 52.5 million members, for a total of 112.5 million users, based on this growth rate (about 2.5 million new users each month, omitting the months in which the benchmarks were published).
Of course, if Apple Music did in fact nearly double the size of its subscriber base, it’s unclear why Apple has yet to announce as much. The company’s significant gains in the service space could have chiefly impacted platforms besides Apple Music, needless to say.
However, given the significant increases in paid users that subscription-based entertainment companies experienced last year – Spotify gained six million paid users in the third quarter of 2020 and another 11 million in the fourth quarter – it is reasonable to assume that Apple Music experienced significant growth as well. Apple Music, which was founded on this premise, recently expanded into 52 additional countries, including Morocco and Cameroon. Executives at Spotify said in their own financial report that they estimate the Stockholm-based platform to have between 366 million and 373 million monthly active users (MAUs) by the end of Q2 2021, and that it will have between 162-166 million premium customers.

When it comes to the statistics on how many people are streaming music – and how many are paying for it – it is easy to become confused and misunderstand what is being said. In one instance, we saw an article claiming that Amazon was “on track to overtake Apple Music,” based on a comparison of an Amazon statistic from January 2020 with an Apple figure that hadn’t been updated since June 2019. The headline of another report said that “Pandora has overtaken Apple for second place” in subscriber rankings, which was incorrect since it incorrectly compared Pandora’s active listeners (the vast majority of whom are not paying subscribers) to Apple’s paid subscriber count.

Spotify has 365 million monthly active users by the end of June 2021, with 165 million premium members and 200 million ad-supported (i.e. free) listeners, according to data from Nielsen.
Apple Music: 60m subscribers (but this is an old number)
Apple reported in June of this year that there were 60 million individuals who were paying for an Apple Music membership. It hasn’t provided an update on the statistic since then, despite the fact that it was adding almost two million net new members every month in the first half of 2019. YouTube’s worldwide head of music, Lyor Cohen, said in November 2020 that more than two billion people enjoy music on YouTube every month, an increase over the previous year. The main YouTube service, rather than the YouTube Music portion, is the one that everyone is familiar with. YouTube had more over 30 million paying members across YouTube Music and YouTube Premium (the latter of which includes access to YouTube Music) as of October 2020, according to data from the company.
Pandora: 55.1m users / 6.2m subscribers
According to the financial reports of parent company SiriusXM, the streaming service Pandora had 55.1 million monthly active users at the end of June 2021 in the United States. 6.5 million of those were referred to as’self-pay’ subscribers.
SoundCloud: 175m users
According to SoundCloud’s advertising website, “we also reach more than 175 million global users each month.” This amount has stayed constant for years — we have press releases referencing it from as far back as 2014. Those who hear music embedded on other websites as well as those who visit SoundCloud’s own website and applications are included in this number.
Audiomack: 17m users
Despite the fact that Audiomack is situated in North America, this streaming service is making a strong emphasis on the continent of Africa in order to expand. By the end of February 2021, it had 17 million monthly users who were active.
Deezer: 16m users

Another reliable source is the consultancy Midia Research, which updates its figures on a regular basis, both in terms of the overall number of subscribers worldwide and the proportion of each specific service.
Here’s how it’s broken down: If we utilize those percentages to determine approximate subscriber numbers, we get the following results: – Spotify has a user base of 155.8 million (although see the top of this article for a more recent official stat) – Apple Music has 77.9 million subscribers; Amazon Music has 63.3 million subscribers.
