What happened to iTunes?
With the release of macOS Catalina, your iTunes media collection is now accessible through the Apple Music app, the Apple TV app, the Apple Books app, and the Apple Podcasts app, among other places. You can also manage and sync material between your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch using the Finder.
Now there’s an app for every media type
Mac OS X Catalina organizes all of your digital media content into specialized applications, including the Apple Music app, the Apple TV app, the Apple Podcasts app, the Apple Books app, and the Apple Podcasts audiobook player. In addition, you may access your iTunes Store purchases using these apps. If you have a PC, you may continue to manage your media collection, make purchases, and manually sync and manage your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iTunes for Windows.
Use Finder to sync and manage your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Finder is the new location for backing up, updating, and restoring your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. Simply connect your device to your Mac, and it will display in the Finder sidebar as soon as it is connected. And you may transfer files to your smartphone by simply dragging and dropping them. To manage your devices, go to Finder and select Manage Devices.
Upgrade your iTunes library
After installing macOS Catalina, all you have to do is launch the Apple Music or Apple TV applications to begin using your iTunes content in the new apps. Do you have several iTunes libraries? How to switch between them in macOS Catalina is demonstrated. Here are some things to know
- The Apple Music app and the Apple TV app both read the contents of your iTunes library, so don’t remove your iTunes library before installing these apps. Allowing the Apple Music app to remain open while your album artwork is downloading will ensure that you see all of your album artwork when you next open it. If you previously had multiple iTunes libraries, your audiobooks are imported into the Apple Books library on your computer, and your podcasts are imported into the Apple Podcasts library on your computer
- If you previously had multiple iTunes libraries, your audiobooks are imported into the Apple Books library on your computer, and your podcasts are imported into the Apple Podcasts library on your computer

How to Listen to Apple Music on a Windows PC
If you subscribe to the Apple Music streaming music service, you most likely listen to your music on an Apple device such as a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Apple Music, on the other hand, can be enjoyed on a Windows PC in the same way. Here’s how to do it.
Method 1: Use the Apple Music Web Player
Web-based music player with UI comparable to iTunes and the Music app has been developed by Apple and can be accessed straight from your web browser. To get started, simply open your favorite web browser and navigate to music.apple.com to get started with it. You may log in using your Apple account credentials after the site has been loaded. Once the site has been loaded, click the “Sign In” button. It is possible that you may be required to validate your login using a passcode on one of your Apple devices as part of the login procedure.
Following your listening session, bookmark the website and simply close your browser.
And don’t forget that the web player is compatible with Mac and Linux operating systems as well!
Method 2: Install iTunes
You may also access the Apple Music service using the iTunes software program. While Apple has transitioned its Mac users to the Music app, iTunes is still operational on the Windows 10 operating system. If you don’t already have iTunes installed, you may get it from the Microsoft Store by clicking on the link below. Once it has been installed, launch “iTunes” and choose AccountSign In from the drop-down option. Your Apple Music membership and your iCloud music collection will be accessible once you’ve signed into your Apple ID account.
You may select any artist from the Apple Music service and listen to the music practically instantaneously if you click “Browse.” This is because the music will stream to iTunes from the internet and no downloads are necessary.

RIP, iTunes. This is what happens to your Apple music now
Apple Music is taking up the majority of the responsibilities previously held by iTunes. Jessica Dolcourt/CNET contributed to this image. This article is a part of the World Water Development Conference 2021. This page contains all of the most recent coverage on Apple’s annual developers conference. iTunes is practically non-existent, causing many to wonder: What happens to all of your music if iTunes is no longer available? Don’t be concerned – Apple will not be taking away your music. However, it is dividing iTunes’ responsibilities into four pieces, with the majority of the labor going to Apple Music.
- Although Apple is confident in your capacity to learn new techniques, the company directs you to Apple Music, iTunes Podcasts, Apple TV and the Finder as opposed to other services like as YouTube.
- iTunes was one of Apple’s first great triumphs in the software market, despite the fact that the firm was originally focused on hardware.
- Apple is now hoping that the success of Apple Music will help to fuel the company’s further expansion into software and services.
- What, if anything, do you need to do to ensure that your investment is protected?
What if you’re using iTunes on a Windows computer? What is going to happen to iTunes Match? And why is Apple discontinuing iTunes in the first place? Listed below is all we know so far regarding Apple’s aims for converting you to Apple Music and other services.

Does iTunes still work today?
Yes. Apple’s iTunes is still promoted on the company’s website. iTunes will be available for the foreseeable future, but Apple will no longer support it in MacOS Catalina, which will be released this autumn.
Why is Apple ending iTunes?
Yes. Even though iTunes is no longer available, Apple promotes it on their website. For the time being, Apple will continue to support iTunes, but the software will be deprecated in MacOS Catalina, which will be released later this year.
Do I still get access to the same number of songs with Apple Music?
Yes, Apple promises a portfolio of more than 50 million songs, as well as collections of music videos (through Apple TV) and podcasts (via iTunes) (through the Apple Podcasts app). More information may be found towards the conclusion of this article.
Does my iTunes collection go away?
No way in hell. When you update from your current Mac OS version to Catalina, every music you’ve ever purchased, ripped, uploaded, or imported will be automatically added to Apple Music as part of your library. All of the files that are currently on your computer will stay on your computer. Apple isn’t going to liquidate anything you currently own; instead, it will restructure the location of your data.
Even my ripped CDs, MP3s and playlists?
Yes, even they are included. Your Apple Music library will have a copy of these songs. Apple’s iTunes is no more.
Will I still be able to burn a CD with Apple Music?
Providing you have an external CD drive and the requisite cords, however this isn’t something we have personally tried out yet.
What about backing up my device, restoring my settings and syncing settings?
ITunes is the program that comes to mind when thinking of backups and syncs, and those features will be available with Catalina as well, but not in the Apple Music app. You may discover them by launching the Finder application on your Mac. That’s the one with the square, stylised symbol with a happy face on it, and it’s the one that serves as the file manager for the operating system. When you open it, you’ll see that a device will show in the Finder menu, such as “Jessica’s iPhone.”
How will I move music onto a device?
If you wish to transfer music from one device to another, you just open one of your media applications, choose the music you want to transfer from your music library, and drag it into the folder for the device to which you are connecting. Apple Music is a subscription service that can be accessed from any of your Apple products. Apple
What happens when I sync my iPhone or other device?
Today, when you put in your iPhone to sync devices, iTunes automatically launches, but this is not the case with Apple Music. If you wish to sync your files, you may locate the option on the sidebar of the Finder. Apple is making this more of an opt-in experience (you initiate the synchronization in Finder), rather than an opt-out one (you close the window if it pops up and bugs you).
What happens to people who use iTunes on Windows?
ITunes will continue to function in its current state on Windows.
Will iTunes still work on older version of MacOS?
You can continue to use iTunes on a Mac running a version of MacOS that is older than Catalina (for example, Mojave), but it will not be available when you update. Currently playing: Keep an eye out for this: Apple’s iOS 13 takes a step toward the dark side of the spectrum. 6:50
I’m confused. How is Apple Music different than iTunes?
Music management, music video viewing, music purchasing, and device synchronization are all possible with iTunes, which is a free program. For $10 per month, or $15 per month for a family of six, or $5 per month for students, Apple Music is an ad-free music streaming subscription service that offers a large library of songs.
Apple Music is a strong competitor to Spotify, and you can listen to music across all of your devices while they are not connected to the internet.
Do I have to subscribe to use the Apple Music app library?
No. If you do not wish to subscribe to Apple Music, you may still listen to your music library. That is a purely voluntary arrangement.
Is the iTunes Store going away?
Apple will discontinue the use of the iTunes name, but the store and its functions will be retained under the Apple Music app. You can use it to purchase new songs and albums, but if you’re a subscriber to Apple Music, you’re unlikely to find much need for a physical shop in your daily life. Apple TV will also have an app for the Mac, iPhone, and Apple Watch, in addition to the TV itself. CNET image courtesy of James Martin
What happens to iTunes Match?
ITunes Match is a function that allows you to listen to a music that you previously purchased through another provider, such as Amazon. If you subscribe to Apple Music, you won’t have to worry about missing out on the functionality because it is already built in.
What if I like to make my own mixes?
In the event that you enjoy DJing your own collection of albums, you’ll be able to import those tracks into Apple Music and listen to them across all of your Apple devices in the future.
What about the Apple TV app – is that where my iTunes movies will live?
Yep! Any movies you purchase through iTunes will be transferred to the Apple TV app for Mac. The Apple TV app (which is available on all of your devices, not just the Apple TV) is where all of your favorite TV series, movies, and music videos will be stored on your Mac, including HBO and Showtime, as well as any iTunes movies you’ve purchased. 4K HDR playback with Dolby Vision graphics and Dolby Atmos audio will be supported, as will HDR 10 and Dolby Vision graphics.
Where does the Apple Podcasts app come in?
Since Apple is distributing iTunes capabilities around the world, this is a reasonable question. Apple Podcasts is a rather easy application – it’s where you can listen to, search for, and subscribe to podcast episodes. Apple Podcasts will also allow you to search for a show or episode by typing a few words or characters into the search bar in MacOS Catalina.
Change is hard. Is there any reason I should skip the Catalina upgrade?
In addition to improving the performance of these applications, Apple recommends that you upgrade to the most recent version in order to get continuing privacy and security upgrades. Read on to find out more about all of the improvements coming to your Mac this autumn with the MacOS Catalina update. Published on the 5th of June, 2019. Updates will be made at 7 a.m. on June 6, 7, 8, 10, 14, 16, and 17th. PT: I’ve included a link. Updated at 6 a.m. Pacific Time on July 5, 2019.

The complete guide to Apple Music
When Apple introduced the iTunes Store in 2003, it was the company that single-handedly flipped the digital music sector on its head. It has now grown into Apple Music, which is a music streaming service that competes with services such as Spotify, Tidal, and other similar services. Whatever your level of Apple Music experience, whether you’re new to the service or have been a member since the beginning, there’s a lot to learn—especially if you’re thinking about switching from another provider.
Apple Music: Getting started
What the hell is this contraption? Apple Music blends subscription-based music streaming with programming that is similar to that of a worldwide radio station. The service is available to customers on a “all you can eat” basis: By paying one low monthly charge, users have access to Apple Music’s huge 90-million-song catalog. All new iPhones, iPads, iPod touches, and Macs come pre-installed with the Music app, which is the interface via which you access the service. The app is also accessible for Android phones, as well as for a wide range of smart TVs, streaming boxes, and gaming consoles.
- Why is Apple Music different from the iTunes Store?
- In no way, shape, or form.
- A distinct iTunes Store application is available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, in addition to the Music app.

Using this, you can get started with the curating of the music that the service feeds into your account.

Moving to Apple Music from other streaming services
I subscribe to iTunes Match on a regular basis. Is it still necessary to have iTunes Match if I subscribe to Apple Music in order to maintain my whole music library in one place? Because iTunes Match and Apple Music are two totally different services, it will be up to you to decide whether or not you want to maintain your existing iTunes Match account after the transition. If you have a large number of rare tunes and other items in your own music library that you can’t obtain through Apple Music, you may want to consider retaining both Apple Music and Spotify memberships.
- Apple continues to offeriTunes Match, a service that allows you to store the music that you own in the cloud using your Apple ID.
- Over the course of several years, I refined my playlists on both Spotify and iTunes.
- When you create an Apple Music account, all of your iTunes playlists, as well as the rest of your iTunes collection, will be immediately imported.
- There is currently no simple method to import your existing playlists into Apple Music.
Music 101: Quality, compatibility, offline listening, and more

Spotify, on the other hand, employs a bitrate of 320kbps, which is a significant reduction. The lossless version of select Apple Music tracks and albums is available at no additional cost when using Apple Music Lossless. However, the most significant advantage of Apple Songs is the newest Spatial Audio function, which is available for certain music.

- You can save as many songs as you like, as long as your device has enough storage space.
- You will not be able to burn them on a CD, utilize them in other video projects, or save them on any other devices that are not linked to your Apple Music subscription.
In the event that you’re concerned about data overages, or if you’re planning on visiting a location where there is no reliable wifi connection, the offline listening function is an excellent choice.
When it comes to radio, iTunes Radio uses a Pandora-style approach, allowing users to construct their own stations based on their favorite songs, artists, albums, or genres, and iTunes will then offer up tracks that are relevant to that topic.
Apple Music’s radio stations, on the other hand, are primarily human-curated, whereas iTunes Radio stations were created using algorithms.
Zane Lowe, a former BBC personality, is in charge of the project from Los Angeles, with Ebro Darden of Hot 97 in New York and Julie Adenuga in London assisting him as well.
That every user on the planet receives the same material at exactly the same moment is extremely remarkable, and these stations take a lot more curated approach to radio than iTunes Radio does, which is incredibly cool as well.
Will the standalone iTunes Radio service continue to be a free service?
All of Apple Music’s radio stations, as well as Apple Music 1 itself, are available for free to anybody with an Apple ID—though the genre- and artist-based radio stations will be sponsored by advertisements and have a restriction on the number of song skips they allow.
Although many of the old record label-sponsored iTunes Radio stations have vanished, you may be out of luck if you want to listen to them now.
