Alternatively, on a Mac, press Command + Non, or Ctrl + Non on a Windows machine. The new playlist is displayed in the Music Playlistssection, with the default name ofPlaylist being highlighted in yellow. Input a descriptive name for the playlist and hit the Enter button
  2. Return to the music library by selecting a topic in theLibrarysection of the page. To include a song in the newly generated playlist, just drag it from your music collection into the playlist you just created. Continue this procedure to add other songs to your playlist. To add a collection of music, choose the first song in the collection, hold Shift (on Mac and PC), then select the final song in the collection. To add individual songs, hold down Command (on a Mac) or Ctrl (on a PC) while selecting each song you wish to include. When you’ve finished adding songs, click on the playlist button to see them all. The number of songs in the playlist, as well as their length, are displayed at the top of the screen. You may also create playlists based on television shows and podcasts. Drag the songs to a new position in the list if you want to rearrange them. For the first song in the playlist to play, double-click it, or choose a song and click thePlaybutton to begin listening. In order to shuffle the songs in a playlist, use theShufflebutton.

The playlist may be downloaded and saved to your computer, or you can print it off and bring it with you. Sync the gadget with iTunes if you want to carry it with you on your phone. If you prefer to have a tangible copy, you may also make a CD.

How to Delete an iTunes Playlist

If you wish to remove a song or an entire playlist from your iTunes library, you have two choices:

  • The playlist should be highlighted when it has been selected
  • Then, press the Delete key. Select Delete from Library from the context menu of the playlist by right-clicking it.

After that, you’ll be asked to confirm that you really want to remove the playlist. When you click the Deletebutton on the pop-up box, the playlist will be erased from your computer. The songs that were included in the playlist are still available for purchase in your iTunes library. The playlist gets erased, but not the individual tracks.

Considerations for iTunes Playlists

In order to comply with the DRM employed by some iTunes Store songs, you are only permitted to burn seven copies of a single playlist containing iTunes Store music to a single CD. A notice displays after you have burned the seventh CD from that iTunes playlist, informing you that you have hit your limit and are unable to make any more copies of the CD. The restriction does not apply to playlists that are completely made of music that was not originally purchased through the iTunes Store. Adding or removing tracks from a playlist might help you get past the restrictions on burning.

However, you cannot use the same playlist again, even if the songs are in a different sequence or if you erase the original and recreate it from scratch.

How to make an Apple Music playlist in iTunes or on iOS

Apple Music hasn’t won over the hearts and minds of the Macworld crew yet. Some of us are very into the recommended playlists—which are sometimes eerily relevant—while others are still struggling with the aftereffects of activating iCloud Music Library (which we have yet to fully embrace). Even aficionados of the streaming service, however, have noted that creating a playlist is far from being as straightforward as it might be. The following is a step-by-step instruction for building and adding songs to an Apple Music playlist using either the iOS or iTunes operating systems: (Don’t want to be the one to provide technical assistance to your friends and family members who are new to streaming?

On iOS

To create a new playlist, select “New” from the drop-down menu beneath “All Playlists.” To make a new playlist on your iPhone or iPad, first select the “My Music” tab from the bottom menu bar, followed by the Playlist tab towards the top of the screen, as seen below. This will display your most recently added playlists at the top of the page, with all of your other playlists displayed below. Select “New” from the drop-down menu under “All Playlists.” Because the type is so small, you’ll want to look at the screenshot on the right for a visual.

  1. Then press the Done button.
  2. Save yourself some time and aggravation.
  3. Have you tapped the Done button yet?
  4. Music you own as well as Apple’s streaming collection may be combined to build playlists on the service, which is one of the service’s major selling advantages; competitors Spotify and Rdio do not allow you to do so.
  5. To add a song or album title from your collection to a playlist, click on the plus symbol next to the title of the song or album.
  6. However, if you keep touching the + symbol, you’ll find that you’ve added the same song ten times in quick succession.
  7. It is possible to search your music collection by keyword or manually browse it, but in any case, do not hit the Add button more than once in order to add a song to your playlist.
  8. Tap the ellipsis, or the three dots, to the right of the song title once you’ve found the music you want to include in your playlist.
  9. Add to a Playlist is located at the bottom of the menu.
  10. You have the option to continue searching for music and adding them to your playlist, or you can stop searching and press Done to put the search on hold for the time being.

When you press the three dots for further options, the option to “Add to a playlist” is always the final one you see.

In iTunes

We’re all aware that the way iTunes organizes and displays your music library is best described as a “hot mess,” and Apple Music has just added to the confusion. To create a new playlist, go to Playlists in your top menu bar and select New Playlist. Then, beneath your list of playlists, click on the plus sign (plus sign) in the lower lefthand corner. If you like, you can give your playlist a name and include a photo and a description. Songs from your Apple Music library—both those that you own and those that you’ve added to your Apple Music catalog—can be dropped into the playlist from this screen, which is considerably more convenient than the clumsy usage of the three-dot menu seen on Apple’s iOS version of the program.

  1. However, if you want to include songs in a playlist that aren’t already in your Apple Music collection, you’ll have to look for them using the search box.
  2. Instead, Apple Music rips you out of your playlist and drops you into a page of search results, where you must use the ellipsis (yes, it strikes again) to add the song you want to your playlist.
  3. To add a song to a playlist, you must first click on the ellipsis icon.
  4. When I access the menu beneath the ellipsis, Apple Music will sometimes allow me to directly add a song to a playlist without having to wait.
  5. However, there are occasions when it requires me to first add the music to My Music before displaying the “Add to” option, resulting in me having to click two more times to add a song.
  6. When it comes to adding songs to playlists in Apple Music, the fact that it takes so many steps to do so encapsulates one of the service’s most serious issues: It is too complicated, and what should be its most fundamental functions are buried under layers of alternatives.

How to Create Playlists for Your iPhone or iPad

Even if you have a large collection of music and other information stored on your computer’s hard drive or in the Apple Musicapp, you don’t always want to listen to a full album. Sometimes all you want to do is listen to your favorite tunes. It is at this point that you should resort to playlists. Via either case, you may make a playlist in iTunes or Apple’s Music app and then sync it with your phone or tablet, or you can create a playlist on your mobile device directly. You may also make several playlists for different types of content, such as movies, television shows, and podcasts.

If your Mac is running macOS Catalina or above, you may use the Apple Music app to listen to music. iTunes will be used by anyone who has a Windows PC or an older Mac. Both applications operate in a similar manner.

Create a New Playlist

There are a handful of different approaches you may take to creating your own playlists. In iTunes or the Music app, selectFileNewPlaylist to add a new playlist entry to the Playlists area of the library. Make a note of the name you want to give your new playlist, such as the name of an artist or the name of a musical genre. To view your collection of individual songs, click on theSongsentry button. Tracks may be added to the playlist by dragging them over to the new playlist entry in the iTunes library.

  1. Another option for adding a song is to right-click on it, hover over Add to Playlist, and pick the playlist from the drop-down menu.
  2. To make the music appear on the playlist, hover your cursor over Add to Playlist and then selectNew Playlist.
  3. A song may be deleted by right-clicking on it and selectingRemove from Playlistfrom the pop-up menu that appears.
  4. Drag a song up or down in the list by selecting it and dragging it.
  5. Would you want to include a brief description of the playlist?
  6. If you choose to Burn Playlist to Disc, you will be able to burn the tracks to a CD.

Create a Smart Playlist

Unlike traditional playlists, which must be created and managed manually, a smart playlist is automatically updated as new music is added to your collection. You may create one of these playlists by selectingFileNewSmart Playlist from the File menu, and then choosing the rules that will be used by the playlist. If you want to keep the content option as Music, you may utilize the drop-down choices to set up the playlist’s rules. A large number of options are available from the first menu, including Artist, Album, Composer, Genre, and Year options.

  • If you selected an artist, album, genre, or other item from the first menu, fill in the blanks with the name of that item in the open area.
  • Choose the most appropriate name.
  • Choose a category such as an artist, an album, a genre, or a year.
  • Check that the option for Live updating is selected after you’re finished, then click OK.

You want to get rid of a playlist, don’t you? You may either right-click on it and choose Delete from Library from the option that appears, or you can just pick it and press theDelete key on your keyboard.

Edit iTunes Automatic Playlists

You’ll notice on the left pane that iTunes has already created some playlists for you based on music you’ve purchased, songs that have certain elements in common, and music you’ve played a lot. These playlists are based on music you’ve purchased, songs that have certain elements in common, and music you’ve played a lot. To listen to the songs on one of these playlists, simply click on the title of the playlist. When you listen to and add new music to your iTunes library, iTunes manages and updates these automated playlists in real time.

Open one of these playlists and click theEdit Ruleslink under the playlist title to modify the rules for that playlist.

When you’re finished, click OK to let your changes take effect.

Create Playlists for Movies, TV Shows, or Podcasts

Besides television episodes and movies, you can also make playlists for podcasts and audiobooks. Alternatively, if you’re using a Windows PC or an earlier version of macOS, you may accomplish this using iTunes. Users of Mac operating systems running Catalina or above can turn to the Podcasts application.

Recommended by Our Editors

Select the collection you wish to see in iTunes, such as TV Shows or Podcasts, and then click on it. Afterwards, proceed in the same manner as explained above for building music playlists. In the Podcasts app, the procedure is a little more complicated. Instead of making a playlist, you should establish a station and then add the podcasts and episodes that you want to listen to.

Sync Playlists

Then there’s the possibility that you wish to sync your playlists with your iPhone or iPad so that you may listen to them on the go. Connect your gadget to your computer via a USB cable. Select your device from the drop-down menu in iTunes. Open Finder on a Mac running Catalina or above and pick your device from the drop-down menu. Music, TV Shows, or any other type of library that contains the playlist you wish to sync will be available for selection. In the Sync box, select the playlists that you wish to sync with one another.

After the sync process is complete, switch to your smartphone.

When you tap thePlaylistsentry, you should see the items that have been synchronized.

Create a New Playlist on iPhone or iPad

You may also make a playlist straight on your iPhone or iPad, without having to use a computer at all. On your device’sPlaylistsscreen, hit theNewbutton in the top-right corner of the screen or theNew Playlistbutton to create a new playlist. Add music to your playlist by giving it a name and a description in the text box provided. To add things to your playlist, go to the Library window and pick Songs, Albums, or any category that you wish to go through to get them. Drill down to see the things you wish to include in your cart.

Then, in the upper-right corner of the window, tapDon to complete your selection.

You have the ability to add new goods, remove existing ones, and rearrange the present items in your cart.

You may now listen to the music on your new playlist by tapping it.

How to Create, Edit, and Delete an Apple Music Playlist in macOS Big Sur

From macOS Catalina onward, iTunes was divided into four independent apps:Apple Music (where your iTunes media collection is stored),Apple TV (the app, not the set-top box or streaming service — yeah, it’s confusing),Apple Booksapp, andApple Podcastsapp. As a result, several modifications were made to the way playlists were handled. But don’t worry, it’s still a very simple process.

How to Create an Apple Music Playlist:

Make a new Music playlist on your computer. The new playlist may be found in the sidebar on the left, underneath the Playlists section of the site.

Create a new playlist and add songs to it at the same time:

  • Choose one or more songs from the list
  • Control-click and select “Add to PlaylistNew Playlist” from the drop-down menu

How to Add Items to a Playlist:

  • Open the Music application and select a playlist from the sidebar on the left. The playlist may be created by dragging an item from your music collection to the playlist or by control-clicking an item and selecting “Add to Playlist,” then selecting a playlist. If you want to add songs to a playlist without putting them in your library, go to “MusicPreferences,” click Advanced, and then uncheck the box that says “Add songs to Library when adding to playlists.”

Add music to an Apple Music Playlist without adding them to your iTunes Library, and vice versa.

How to Edit a Music Playlist:

Open Music and select a playlist from the drop-down menu. Then you may do the following:

  • Replace the playlist’s name by clicking on the playlist’s name at the top of the window and typing the new title

You may alter the name of a playlist by choosing it straight from the list.

  • Rearrange the tracks in the following order: “ViewSort By” is the option to select. When you select “ViewSort ByPlaylist Order,” you have the option of dragging things into the order you like. Remove an item from the list: Select the item and press the Delete key to remove it from the list. (If you already have the removed music in your library, removing it from a playlist will not remove it from your library or storage device.)

How to Delete an Apple Music Playlist:

  • Activate the Music app, choose a playlist, then press the Delete key.

Confirm that you wish to remove the chosen Music Playlist from your computer. If you remove a playlist, the music contained inside the playlist will stay in your collection and on your Mac until you delete them again. So, if you want to delete a playlist from your library, Control-click the playlist in the sidebar on the left and select Delete from Library from the context menu.

Just got Apple Music? Here’s how to keep your Spotify playlists

Apple Music / Spotify Have you already been lured by the allure of anApple Onesubscription? Is it possible that the delayed inclusion of Fitness+ has now prompted a reassessment? If you are a Spotify subscriber who is considering making the transfer to Apple Music, you should know how to save your carefully created playlists and move them to your new Apple Music home. Fortunately, it’s a really straightforward process. It is an iOS software called SongShift that provides the solution, which I have personally used to avoid the ever-increasing fees of streaming services by taking advantage of regular deals and discounts.

To easilyshiftyoursongs, you only need to provide it access to your music subscriptions using your web browser.

It is possible that your results will change because both Spotify and Apple Music provide an enormous number of music (many with different versions).

While migrating from Spotify to Apple Music is the primary topic of this article, SongShift also supports a variety of other services such as YouTube Music, Tidal, Pandora, LastFM, and others.

It is also possible to move tracks back and forth across computers. So, if you decide to move back to Spotify from Apple Music, you will be able to do so without any difficulty.

Download SongShift

In order to begin, you’ll need to download SongShift from the Apple App Store. Following your purchase, it’s as simple as picking the supported music services you’d like to move your content to and from, then logging into each account using SongShift’s interface.

Transfer your Spotify playlists

The next step once you’ve downloaded SongShift is to logon into each of the accounts that you wish to move your playlists to. In this situation, you’ll want to use the SongShift app to sign into Spotify and Apple Music, respectively. Once you’ve signed into each account, go to “Setup Source” and select the Spotify playlist you’d like to move across to your other accounts. Then, under “Setup Destination,” pick Apple Music from the drop-down menu. Next, just select “I’m Done,” and the transfer of your priceless playlists will get underway.

Review your transfer

You may now go through SongShift’s work and make sure everything is in working condition. After selecting “Ready for Review,” you will be able to browse through all of the matches that the app has made. You may easily remedy a mistake by simply selecting the offending match and searching for the proper song again. When you’re finished, click “Confirm Matches,” and SongShift will generate a new playlist in your destination based on your selections. That’s all there is to it. You’ve been swapped.

Switching from Spotify to Apple Music

If you change your mind, you can even transmit your most recent playlists back the opposite way – from Spotify to Apple Music – if you like. If you were a reluctant Apple Music customer who eventually made the leap to iOS in order to take advantage of features such as offline listening on your Apple Watch, the switch may be something you’re considering. Spotify, on the other hand, just stated that it will be offering this same functionality. It will be implemented to the Wear OS for Android smartwatches in the near future as well.

It’s just as quick and as straightforward as before.

Alternatives to SongShift

Despite the fact that SongShift is our #1 choice for switching streams, it may not be suitable for everyone. In the event that you don’t want to download an app, there are other alternatives, such asSoundiizoffering an in-browser experience. In this case, the most significant benefit is that Soundiiz offers significantly more capability if you’re a customer of numerous streaming services – including the ability to transfer from multiple accounts at the same time. There’s also FreeYourMusic, a popular option that can be utilized on a variety of platforms including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux.

Some features, such as Smart-Links for sharing your playlists across several services, Auto-Sync for keeping your playlists up to date by refreshing every 15 minutes, and specialized support, are only available as part of a premium subscription.

Making the most of your Apple One subscription

If you’ve just acquired Apple Music as a result of investing in a newApple Onebundle, you’ll most likely have a broader range of content available to you at your fingertips. Based on the bundle you choose, you’ll be able to provide Apple TV+, App Store access, Apple News, more iCloud storage, and Apple Fitness+, if you opt for the most expensive plan. Music, TV+, Arcade, and iCloud storage are all included in the Individual and Family packages, which cost £14.95 and £19.95 per month, respectively, and are available for purchase.

If you enjoy online gym classes or premium publications, you may want to consider the Premium package, which costs £29.95 per month.
