Stop Apple Music spying on you: Wipe your Recently Played list

As soon as you play a song on Apple Music, it will be automatically added to your Recently Played history (shown in the For You tab on Mac and iPhone). In general, this is advantageous since it allows you to skip directly to the content you’re interested in while also providing Apple Music with some indication of the type of music you enjoy. Delete it from your history if you don’t want your friends and followers to know what you’ve been listening to, if your children have been listening to Baby Shark on repeat, or if you left your iPhone or HomePod playing music only to return to find it had played all of your least favorite tracks, among other reasons.

For more basic information, visit How to Use Apple Music for additional information.

How does the Recently Played list work?

You may instantly add a song to your Recently Played history by just playing it in Apple Music (shown in the For You tab on Mac and iPhone). It’s generally beneficial since it allows you to get right into the content you’re interested in while also giving Apple Music some indication of the type of music you enjoy. When you don’t want your friends and followers to know what you’ve been listening to, such as when your children have been listening to Baby Shark on repeat, or when you accidentally left your iPhone or HomePod playing music and returned to find it had played all of your least favorite tracks, you may want to delete the track from your history.

There isn’t a straightforward option entitled Clear Recently Played History, but we’ve come up with a quick and simple solution that will allow you to delete any embarrassing tracks from your recent play history. See How to Use Apple Music for more general information.

Who can see your Recently Played list?

Additionally, your Recently Played list will be made public to those who follow you on Apple Music, albeit they will not be able to view nearly as many items as you do. Take a look at the Friends Are Listening To section of the For You page, then click/tap See All, and you’ll notice that all of your friends’ listening histories have been mashed together. The three persons we follow have their last 17 albums available for one of them, their last 16 albums for another, and their last one album for the third.

How to remove Recently Played albums

We can wipe the slate of the past now that we have all of this information. By listening to different songs (music that is cooler or less contentious than what we are currently listening to, for example), we may swiftly eliminate all of the items on our list that we do not want to be there. And because we only have to listen to a fraction of a second of each record, it won’t take long for us to complete our task. The Playlists section of the For You tab is probably the best place to look for a large number of albums, but any place where you can see thumbnails of a large number of different albums or playlists (rather than songs, which would only push out one old entry per album they are on) will suffice for this purpose.

This will add extra time to the process.

Wait until you hear the first few bars of the first track, and then repeat the process for the next album you see on the screen.

Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to figure out how to erase the entries without also deleting the fresh ones.

How to remove or block someone on Apple Music

It is possible to cleanse the past with all of this knowledge in mind. It is possible to swiftly eliminate all of the items on our list by listening to different songs (maybe music that is cooler or less contentious than what we now listen to). It won’t take long, though, because we’ll only be listening to a fraction of a second of every record. The Playlists section of the For You tab is probably the best place to look for a large number of albums, but any place where you can see thumbnails of a large number of different albums or playlists (rather than songs, which would only push out one old entry per album they are on) will suffice as a replacement.

Simply move the mouse over the album artwork until you see a play button appear, and then click on it to begin listening to the album from the very beginning of the album.

Completely replacing your history with new anonymous entries will take 40 repetitions, but as we’ve explained, taking out approximately 20 or 30 records should be sufficient to conceal your actions from the vast majority of persons who are tracking you.

Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to figure out how to erase the records without also deleting the new entries that were created in their place.

Clear queue in Apple Music on iOS 14

This first section is a bit of a rant, so you may move forward to the next bolded section of text. So, to recap my concerns on the native music app that I expressed in the comments section: Because it is most likely not a feature, but rather default program behavior, it is most likely something that has gone unnoticed by the developers up to this point in time. Why would a developer implement a feature that allows the program to remember where you left off if they don’t have to? So they didn’t precisely delete a feature; rather, they introduced a feature that, for want of a better description, prevented what I would refer to as an exploit from occurring.

Generally speaking, I’ve always been a big fan of 3rd party apps in general, but when it comes to music apps in particular, I’d never even considered that the native app could be used in this manner because 3rd party apps had far superior queue systems long before Apple integrated one into the native music player.

  • And, from what I gather, Apple has been more stringent in several areas relating music applications over the years, which is why many players now have varied concessions and, in other cases, have completely vanished from the market.
  • Assuming the song you choose was located in the album view, clicking on it would add all of the songs included inside the album to the queue, with the selected song being placed first.
  • It’s possible that if the app fails, it will clear it.
  • Do not use the play or shuffle buttons at the top of the screen; instead, simply choose the music.
  • You can, of course, choose to forego it entirely.

However, it is possible that it will be too much work for what it is worth. Solution 2 – Third-party applications Due to the fact that I did not test every single 3rd party player, there may yet be better alternatives out there.

  • This first section is a bit of a rant, so you may move forward to the next bolded section of text below it. Basically, my feelings on the native music app are summarized in the comments below. Because it is most likely not a feature, but rather usual software behavior, it is most likely something that has gone unnoticed until now. So, why would a developer bother to include a feature that allows the program to remember where you last left off? To be precise, they didn’t delete a feature
  • Instead, they introduced a feature that, for want of a better term, prevented what I would refer to as an exploit from occurring. That is not to imply the OP said it was a feature, but more that they probably never imagined anybody would use the music app in this manner and that they did not view it as replacing one function with another, thus I would not anticipate them adding a “clear queue” option very soon. As a general rule, I’ve always been a big fan of 3rd party apps
  • However, when it comes to music apps in particular, I’d never even considered that the native app could be used in this manner because 3rd party apps had far superior queue systems long before Apple implemented one in the native music player. The most innovative 3rd party applications have been available almost since the inception of the platform, and Apple has been quietly adding the best features, such as music queues. And, from what I gather, Apple has been more stringent in several areas involving music apps over the years, which is why many players now have different concessions and, in other cases, have completely vanished from the marketplace. App that plays native music as a first solution As a first step, selecting a song from the queue prompts you to choose whether or not you wish to clear it
  • If you choose to do so, it clears the queue while simultaneously adding all the songs that are associated with that song to it. Assuming the song you choose was located in the album view, clicking on it would add all of the songs included inside the album to the queue, with the picked song being placed first. This means that clearing the queue just to empty it is not an option. When the program crashes, it may be possible to erase the cache. In that case, the only solution I can see is to create a playlist with only one song and then choose that song from the playlist in order to empty the queue of all the songs in the playlist. Simply choose the music by clicking on it rather than the play or shuffle buttons at the top. The one rather significant drawback is that you are unable to delete this music from your queue, which isn’t a big deal if the song in question is one that you often listen to. If you don’t want to do it, that’s OK. I can think that you could probably get past this by simply creating an empty 2 second audio clip and putting it to the Music app through Itunes, after which you could create a playlist out of the clips you have created. Nonetheless, it’s possible that it’ll be too much bother for too little gain. Third-party applications are a solution. Due to the fact that I did not test every single 3rd party player, there may yet be better alternatives available to you.
  • It is compatible with Apple Music, including cloud-based and downloaded tunes. Squeeze the left-hand side of a song to add it to the queue. In the upper right corner of the “currently playing” screen, you’ll see the standard horizontal three-dot menu, which includes the option to “Clear song queue.” There is a picklistmenu in the upper right corner of every song list that allows you to add several songs to the queue at the same time, or you may select to play them next, which completely clears the queue. Sliding the album cover left and right on the “now playing” screen will take you to the previous and next song, respectively. Syncing the queue with the native Music app may or may not be considered a pro, depending on your definition of “pro.” When you empty the queue in this app, it also clears the queue in the original app on your device. If you add songs to the queue, they will be added to the native app as soon as possible. Adding songs to the queue via the native app will result in the tracks being added to the Picky queue. If you remove a song from the queue, it is also deleted from Picky, and so on.
  • The UI is generally pleasing, however now that I’ve become accustomed to the native music player, I’m not a great fan of how the song listings are these really small lists with no album art displayed at the top of the screen
  • Individual songs in the queue cannot be edited, such as by moving or removing them. Of course, you have the option of adding more items to the top of the queue or clearing the entire backlog.
  • Individual songs in the queue can be edited in the native music app, but not the entire queue. Picky modifies the native queue every time you make a modification to it, and it maintains synchronization in both directions.

Among the honorable mentions are:

  • Honourable mentions include the following individuals:
  • *Only works with Apple Music tracks that have been downloaded:( If this is a deal breaker, don’t bother reading the pros because it will just make you unhappy
  • By swiping right, you may move a song to the bottom of a queue. Swipe left to move a song to the top of the queue
  • Swipe right to remove a song from the top of the queue. A song is moved to the top of the queue and begins playing immediately after being clicked
  • However, this is not the case. The option to Play now is available after a long click (press). Queue should be replaced. Queue has its own tab, which I find really convenient
  • The “Queues” page allows you to manage and start playing any queues that you have saved
  • There is also a “Queues” button on the main menu.
  • This is a major drawback: while you may create, remove, and rename saved queues, you are unable to alter the music included within them. You must first play the queue that has been saved, then make any necessary changes in the “Queue” tab and save it again:/
  • (1st icon) Clears the queue – or, if you were playing from a stored queue, it returns the game to the saved queue you were playing from. Which is kind of great, but I also believe I should be able to click the symbol again to clear the queue, but I can’t since the icon is grayed out:/
  • I’m not sure why this is happening. (2nd icon) Saves the current queue into the “Queues” tab, with the current date as a placeholder name for the queue.
  • There’s also a swipe left and right over the album art on the currently playing screen
  • On the “Queues” page, you can use the same swipe movements to add the whole stored queue to the current queue
  • And there’s a swipe up and down over the currently playing screen’s album art. It’s fantastic that you can export stored queues to the native application. I’d guess it’s been imported as a playlist, though.
  • This program plays songs independently of the main music app
  • It was a pleasant surprise to discover it. I don’t recall ever having used this feature, but it turns out that you can queue up songs and have them played. Sort odd
  • I’m a little shocked that it works with Apple Music and that Apple hasn’t taken down the site just yet. Because it’s on your phone, it’s not like you can use it as a full-fledged music server, but it’s still a convenience. It’s similar to creating a “radio station,” albeit they refer to them as “channels,” where you can add music from the Music app to play on the radio. Then it just plays the queue that was created. Strangely enough, as soon as a song is finished, it is removed from the queue, but the final song remains in the queue and continues to play on repeat until you stop it or add more music. When you establish a channel, you have two options: either party mode or radio mode
  • You can also share these channels with your friends.
  • Party mode: From a cursory inspection, it appears that party mode is one in which you may play music through your phone speakers, Bluetooth speakers, or whatever, and your friends can also participate. Does this have any effect on the queue in any way? “Party mode” is something I’m not really sure how it would operate, but it does exist. I’m not sure if they have complete control over what’s playing right now or in the future
  • Again, a cursory scan indicates that it would be otherwise identical, except your buddies would be hearing it through their phone speakers
  • Radio mode:
  • Apple Music is a service that allows your friends to add songs to their Apple Music library if they enjoy the song or anything. It is also compatible with Spotify.
